The DE combination of the display of your Whirlpool washing appliance signalizes that there is a problem with the hatch door. In other words, the door of your device can not be closed or locked properly. DE is one of the codes which are easy to decipher, as it literally means the Door Error.
This code is usually accompanied by one of the following symptoms:
- The hatch can be closed but not locked;
- The door can not be closed at all;
- The door can not be opened after the washing cycle is completed.
What can cause the DE Error?
The possible reasons for this error can be divided into two groups: mechanical and electrical. With the mechanical ones, it’s pretty easy: whether the hook of the lock, the door handle, or the loops of the hatch are damaged.
As for the electrical causes, they may include the control board malfunction (in very rare cases) or the failure of the hatch locking device or its wiring connection with other elements of the appliance.
How to fix the DE Error?
First of all, let’s eliminate the system glitch from the list of possible causes. Turn off and unplug your device from the main power for 10-15 minutes. Turn it back on, close the door, and try to run a test program by pressing Start. If the error code is still indicated in the screen, start the thorough examination of the door and the locking device.
Whirlpool is known for a very reliable hatch and locking systems, so the appearance of the DE code on the screen is not typical for this brand at all, but if it is already there, you need to determine the reason and fix everything, otherwise, you won’t be able to use your washer.
Check the door for any visible signs of damage. Maybe it is misplaced and the loops that are holding it are loosened, then you have to tighten them up. One of the first things to check is the hook of the lock as it can be broken or slightly curved, in this case, it has to be replaced.
The handle of the door is another element that can be broken after a long time of using if this is what causes the DE Error, it is recommended to replace it, as the handle is almost impossible to repair properly. Disassembling the door and replacing the handle is not a difficult thing to do. You will only need a screwdriver and pliers. Make sure you remember how the glass is located, not to confuse anything when assembling the hatch back again.
In the case of the hatch lock device failure, check all the wires connecting it to other details of the machine. You inspect it just visually or use a multimeter to determine a problem zone. Some of the contacts might have burned out and must be replaced. In case the issue is with the device itself, it is also better to install a new one, in order to save your time and nerves.
