I’m Christopher Jackson, a military veteran and a retired appliance repair technician.
First, let me tell you how I moved from the military service to appliance repair.
I was in the Marine Corps. Most of the time, I was in the Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay (the Marine Corps Base Hawaii). I spent eight years there in the late 1990s-early 2000s. I had been trained as an artillery surveyor, using satellites. When I left military service, I was sure I would find a job pretty soon. Anyway, surveying is a big part of the construction. Yet, it turned out that finding work in my small community not far from Tampa, Florida, was not that easy.
Eventually, I started to consider jobs that were not connected with surveying, and it was then that I decided to join a home appliance repair company. They provided me a local job and cross-trained me.
While I had to learn a lot of new things, the new job also required some of the qualities I developed during my years in the military, including attention to detail and the ability to follow the linear progression of things – all these complement our military training.
I spent over 15 years working in appliance repair. During these years, I repaired several thousands of appliances, from washers and dishwashers to refrigerators, dryers, ovens, etc. In other words, I gained enough experience to share with my readers. Also, after I retired in 2017, I got plenty of time in my hands, which I can devote to my blog.
I have to say that although I retired, I can’t imagine my life without my work, so I still sometimes help my neighbors, friends, or very old clients with repairing or troubleshooting their appliances. And this website is the place to which I refer them when they need urgent help while I am away, for instance.
I know that the majority of my readers are those who do not have training or much experience working with household appliances. This is why I always try to explain things in a way that everyone can understand and try the suggested solutions.
Yet, I also hope to write a series of posts for professional technicians. Quite often during my years of work, I have encountered unusual situations when the recommendations I had received during my training could not be applied and there was a need for a different solution. Here, I share what I have discovered during my experiments. I guess this will be the most interesting part of the blog for those with advanced knowledge!
